Hybrid Monte Carlo/Collision-based Kinetic Energy Transfer Computer Simulation for Vertical Flow through Non-consolidated Porous Media

Abstract:
We present a hybrid model, which combines the Monte Carlo (Metropolis Algorithm) with a collision-based kinetic energy transfer model in order to simulate vertical fluid flow (from bottom up) through non-consolidated porous media. Using this computer simulation model we study how diffusion process (caused by concentration gradient), hydrostatic pressure bias, and gravity force interplay with the velocity field of the fluid. We incorporate explicit velocities for both fluid and barrier particles (mobile particles that form the non-consolidate porous medium) such that the collision-based kinetic energy transfer model can be applied. Center of mass displacement, flux of both fluid and barrier particles, permeability as well as particle distribution over time are analyzed. The computer implementation is performed using Fortran and MPI optimized to run in supercomputers and clusters for a variety of large system sizes. Visualization of the simulation is also presented.
