Abstract:
A model that correlates application performance characteristics with power consumption would be very useful in practice for dynamic power management.
We use POWER6 microprocessor based blades in our study.
POWER6 is a high frequency, in order micro-architecture that has innovative features such as SMT (simultaneous multi-threading) that IBM has introduced recently. We have considered a carefully chosen set of applications to draw correlations between application characteristics and power consumption. We use hardware performance counters to characterize performance of applications. We measure the overall power consumption at server level as well as at core and memory DIMM level.
We identify a small set of key performance metrics that indicate power consumption. We provide guidelines for optimizing the integral power consumption over the duration of application execution by (1) exploting the hardware features like SMT and (2) through trade off analysis of system configuration.
