Room 18A/18B/18C/18D
The commercial airplane market continues to become more competitive. Fuel mileage is a critical element in the competitive landscape. Numerical simulations and the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) contributes greatly to creating vehicles that offer superior performance. The 787 benefited greatly from the use of CFD. Several applications of CFD to the 787 will be discussed. Today the push is for more environmentally friendly aircraft -- meaning fewer emissions and less noise. Governments are discussing using carbon as a trade limiter. To minimize this impact numerical tools will be pushed well beyond their capabilities of today.
