Indications are that HPC is at a cross-roads: the market success of commodity-based systems is undoubted, but the appearance of accelerators of several kinds indicate that at least a significant portion of HPC-applications pose requirements which are not optimally met by standard components. Users - and even vendors - are concerned about the general usability of many-core, and about the memory-wall. Naturally this kind of scenario will evolve over time based on both technical and market aspects. Remarkably simple investigations point into a direction which is closely resembled by NEC's future plans.
