Parallel Computing from Client to Clusters: A Continuous or a Disjoint Space?

Primary Session Leader:
John Feo  (Microsoft Corporation)

Birds-of-a-Feather Session
Thursday,  12:15PM - 01:15PM
Room 11A/11B
With the arrival of manycore processors even the simplest computing device will be a parallel computing system. Parallelism will be pervasive extending from the simplest mobile devices to client systems to servers to the largest HPC systems. Parallel code will be written by the masses regardless of their computing device of choice. This birds-of-a-feather session brings together interested parties to discuss these facts. Is the space defined by the different system types continuous or disjoint? Are there any classes of applications and methods that span the entire space? If yes, how do the physical parameters of the different system types effect each class? How do the applications' capabilities and usability vary with system type? Are there parallel programming models, languages, and tools that can span the space of machines? If so, how platform independent are they with regards to design, productivity, performance, and correctness. Come prepared for an interactive discussion.
